Thanks we give to God!

Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States. But people of faith recognize that all we have comes from God. Here is a Thanksgiving prayer that you can use to bless you table and your home. It’s adapted from “Bread for the Day,” a beautiful resource for daily thanksgiving.

A Thanksgiving Prayer

We gather this day to give thanks to God for the gifts of this land and its people. God has been generous to us! So, we ask God’s blessing upon this food we share. At the same time, we ask that God keep us mindful of the lonely and the hungry.

Gracious God, most provident, we join all creation in offering you praise through Jesus Christ. For generations, the people of this land have sung of your bounty. With them, we offer you thanks for the rich harvest we have received at your hands. Bless us and this food that we share with grateful hearts. Please contiue to make our land fruitful. Let our love for you be seen in our pursuit of justice and peace. May we respond generously to those in need.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen!

Thanksgiving Bible reading

“I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace God has given you in Christ Jesus. For, in every way, God has enriched you in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind. Just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you. So that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end. So, you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

— St. Paul, 1 Corinthians 1:4-8
