Do the good you do in God’s powerful Name!
The name of God is so incredibly powerful! So much so, that God’s second commandment to us, of the Big 10, warns us not to use it lightly. But God does want us to use his name to heal, declare his praise, and act with love and generosity.
“If salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace.” – Mark 9:36
Even giving a cup of water, for Jesus’ sake, brings blessings to the giver, Jesus says in today’s reading.
Belief in the power of God’s name, and in Jesus’ name too, is like salt, Jesus tells his followers. It seasons everything. Remember that, in Jesus’ time, salt was an important food preservative, too. We also know, now, that salt in the right proportion is essential for good health. Jesus says God’s salt even gives us peace. How amazing is God’s salt!
Merciful and compassionate God, please keep me well-seasoned with your holy, precious and life-changing salt! Amen.
Today at Peace
Today’s Bible readings: Numbers 11:4-6, 10-16, 24-29; Psalm 19:7-14; James 5:13-20; Mark 9:38-50. Read them here.
Preaching today: The Rev. Judith Morgado. Some years back, Pastor Judith was our associate pastor, so we welcome her return today!
Need pastoral care? Please call the office at (530) 273-9631. We’re in Monday through Thursday, 8:30am-3:30pm; closed for lunch 12-1pm.
Coffee Fellowship: After worship service, please walk over to the Fellowship Center (down the hall and around the corner) to pick up coffee & baked goods! We would love to meet you and get to know you a little bit.
Like natural seasons, our church seasons have a special meaning for our spiritual lives. For us, we are in “Time After Pentecost,” a season of growth followed by harvest – much like fall! Read about Time After Pentecost here.
9:45-10:45am Sunday in the new Youth-Family Lounge. We’re learning about Elijah — and how to listen for God’s still, small voice.
Youth @ PEACE is our all-ages Bible study, where young disciples learn the core stories of our faith and what it means to walk the Jesus Path. We welcome all who yearn to learn about our loving, gracious Creator.
Kids in church: PLEASE bring your young children to church! Their fussing and squealing may pain you, but they make us glad! Pick up an activity bag as you go into the Sanctuary (on the left in a basket, ask an usher). During the sermon, you can take your kids to our Nursery; a speaker is turned on so you can hear the sermon and follow the service.
Toddler Time: If you’re interested in our special Sunday School program for the tiniest of disciples, call (530) 575-6132 for information. It’s available starting in the fall.
