Afraid, no! Ready, yes!
This is a time of year when people get ready. The county fair starts next week. School begins soon after. College kids head to other towns or states. Perhaps a new job, a move or other life change looms.
We know to get ready. We prepare our clothes, buy new shoes and backpacks, and make up new calendars listing events, practices and meetings. We know it’s better to prepare than to suffer a nasty surprise at the last minute, when no time remains.
“You also must be ready.” – Luke 12:40
Jesus tells his followers to prepare for the Big Day. He tells them to get rid of the material possessions that weigh them down. He reminds them to have no fear as they embark on their new lives as believers. And, in typical Jesus style, he tells stories about people who are ready and people caught asleep at the wheel.
No one knows when God will come for his faithful ones. At PEACE, we welcome all who, like us, try mightily to prepare!
Pastor Eileen Smith Le Van preaches today.
Today’s Bible readings: Genesis 15:1-6; Psalm 33:12-22; Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16; Luke 12:32-40. Read them here.
Coming up at PEACE
- Church Picnic — Our Annual Church Picnic takes place on the afternoon of Sunday Sept. 18, at Lake Wildwood. Enjoy barbecued chicken, ribs, burgers & hot dogs; bring a potluck salad or dessert to share. Then, play horse-shoes, croquet, take a ride on the lake, enjoy children’s games & puzzle challenges. Sign up in the Atrium.
- God’s Work, Our Hands – On the weekend of Sept. 10-11, we don yellow T-shirts and let others know the joy we experience when we let God use our hands to do His work. Projects include singing hymns at Golden Empire Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center; building at our local Habitat for Humanity site; and preparing personal care kits used in disaster areas around the world, through Lutheran World Relief.
