We continue our forty-day Lenten journey with Jesus, focusing on repentance, renewal, reconciliation, and God’s relationship with us through Jesus Christ. On Ash Wednesday the church began its Lenten journey toward baptismal immersion in the death and resurrection of Christ. This year, the Sundays in Lent lead us to focus on five covenants God makes in the Hebrew Scriptures and to use them as lenses through which to view baptism. In Genesis, God saved Noah’s family in the flood and offers a new covenant. In Mark, Jesus is baptized and then driven into the wilderness, where he is tempted and afterwards begins his ministry of proclaiming the good news of God. Through baptism, God makes a covenant with us and the new life we are given in baptism is for the sake of the whole world. What does baptism mean for you in the midst of the world around us?
