Memory verses — A few basics

Why memorize Bible verses? When we bring the Word of God deeply into our consciousness, especially at a young age, God’s wisdom comes to us at times of need, guiding and comforting us.

  • The verses in this list are shorter than verses suggested for older readers.
  • Children are encouraged to memorize the citation (the chapter & verse) along with the verse. Over time, this contributes to a working knowledge of the Bible. It also ensures that we know the source of the wisdom.
  • This list includes the version of the Bible from which each verse is drawn. RSV stands for Revised Standard Version; NRSV stands for New Revised Standard Version; and Msg stands for The Message. Different versions are selected for the beauty or impact of the writing. It is NOT necessary to memorize the version.
  • Earn a Bible Buck for every verse learned! Redeem your Bible Bucks for cool prizes. See the Youth & Outreach Coordinator at church on Sundays during the summer or during Sunday School in the fall to get your bucks.
