So what about this “transfiguration” story? As far as I can tell, it is pointless to asks how this all took place. I don’t think it has to do with Jesus “aglow” in the dark. I don’t think it has much to do with Moses and Elijah appearing there. I don’t even think it has to do with the disciples wanting to stay on the mountaintop.
Epiphany 4B; Lectionary 4: This is the story of Jesus and the person possessed by an “unclean spirit” from Mark’s Gospel–about the clash of powerful forces–the clash of good and evil.
The study was on the calling of the disciples. It was on how those first disciples dropped everything to follow Christ. Pastor Bill’s purpose was to get people to start thinking about their call to Christ. So, the question he asked was: “If Jesus were to come up to you and say: “Follow me!” what would be your response?”
Uncomfortable. Threatened. Panicked. Even scared. We should be uncomfortable when it comes to baptism. We should be panicking when we really think about the power that is release by the Almighty when His Spirit comes to action in our lives. We should be even more scared when God drops down on us with the Holy Spirit.
